Norfolk History
Norfolk and its surrounding suburbs were incorporated into a borough in 1736. This was under the direction of King George II of England. In 1776, the town was completely destroyed by the British during the Revolutionary War. The town was not rebuilt until 1783 when the British lifted their blockade. In 1803, Norfolk was divided into eight different wards. Each ward elected its own government officials. Norfolk officially became a city in 1845, and Virginia briefly seceded from the union in 1861. The city has gone from 50 acres of land when it was first founded to 61.86 square miles today.
